Going on an adventure

Over 9 months ago, I uploaded the first part of the hiking trail North Sea trail (nordsøstien) to my YouTube channel. The idea was, and still is - over time, to break up the 5000km long journey, into small bits, a little at a time. So far this has lead to a seven part video series with me walking a big part of the path in the northern part of Jutland.

The idea of the North Sea Trail, were to combine small paths across different countries, to one big connected path (when writing this, I just read - that the whole project, got laid down). An official trail or not, I will still keep chipping away, small bits at a time.

This summer I wanted to get started with the Swedish part of the trail, and planned an almost 100km walk from Malmö to Helsingborg, over the span of 4 days. Starting this Sunday the 3rd of august, till Wednesday the 6th.

I divided the route into what made most sense for me, with what I think will be a realistic goal and where I could find shelters along the way. Even though I got my tent, I still wanted the option, to grab a shelter.

The distance on each day will look like this:

day 1 - Sunday, when arriving at Malmö and walking to Lomma - 9,54km
day 2 - from Lomma to Saxtorpsskogen, passing by Barsebäck - 37,2km
day 3 - from Saxtorpsskogen to Rydebäck - 28,5km
day 4 - from Rydebäck and to the ferry in Helsingborg - 15,7km

When walking long distances at home, or when I enter the challenge of 100km in under 24 hours, I am fairly used to a light backpack, but for this adventure I need to pack a lot more. I was never in doubt, that my beloved Fjällräven Friluft 35 liter backpack would somehow work, but in hindsight it pains me to confess, that maybe it’s a little too small for this hike. It is also to my believe that, the bigger the bag, the more crap and useless things you bring. Just because you got the space. This trip will work as a big learning curve for me, what works, and what can I hopefully learn and improve next time.

Here is how I ended up packing the small Friluft 35 liter bag:

I wanted to bring three different cameras (four, if you include the dji video camera), because I knew that I wanted to bring both the option of digital, and analog. I went with my Canon 5D III with a cheap Sigma 70-300mm f. 4-5.6, for the digital photos, that will be used in the upcoming video on my channel. For the analog part, I could not decide between my Canon A1, and the Pentax, I really liked the idea of the Pentax, being able to shoot panoramic scenes, but I wanted the 50mm on the A1, so I packed them both. To accommodate the A1 and Espio 115, I packed 2 rolls of Cinestill 400D, and 2 rolls of Portra 160.

the three amigos

There will be a post, on the other end of my trip - with my thoughts of this little adventure, with the photos I take, and of course there will be a video on my YouTube channel @friskluft as well.
