Local brutalism
Earlier this week, I was introduced to the work of a local photographer Andy R. Țurcan, and his photos on the instagram account @soviets_statusquo
With a focus on brutalist architecture, Andy’s photos took me on a trip, through the brutal, yet beautiful landscape of rural Moldova.
Like the prior movement bauhaus, both emphasized functionality and simplicity as the core value. There is something captivating with the style of brutalism, and its raw beauty.
Andy’s work, made me want to revisit some photos I took back in 2023, of the buildings surrounding “sygehus nord” the northern hospital in Aalborg. The photos were taken on my Fujifilm x100s, and edited in Lightroom afterwards.
I was aiming for a certain look, a feeling that these buildings could easily have been placed in the old Soviet Union, or at least for me they could.
I came up with the idea of making an architecture magazine straight out of the Soviet Union with brutalism in mind, and this is what I came up with:
With everything going on in the world, I went with a Ukrainian inspired magazine. I called the magazine “Buildings - Supreme Edition” and made this issue focus on the text the walls are listening.
If you have any question, or just want to give me any feedback, feel free to write below, and please go check out Andy’s work over at @soviets_statusquo
